Self-Care For Real Life: The Relaxing Breath

Life can be so crazy sometimes, but we can always choose the way we will respond. 

We can grump and groan about all our problems, or we can take a pause and move forward with faith and courage.

Use this super easy self-care tip to help you calm down and get more clarity.

The 4-7-8 Pattern

This technique is called the 4-7-8 pattern, or the relaxing breath.

It can be used to…

  • Reduce anxiety
  • Help you sleep
  • Manage anger or irritation
  • Curb cravings

To feel its calming effects, you breathe in through your nose for a count of 4, hold your breath for 7, and exhale forcefully through your mouth with a whooshing sound for a count of 8.

The longer exhale is what really helps you to calm down.

Repeat as long as needed.
